Using the little folding shovel, Price and David got a fairly decent grave dug. The looser dirt near the river made the job less arduous than they expected, and none of them mentioned to Bree that the body might wash out if there was a heavy rain or the river flooded. She didn’t need to know that.

She said a few words about her friend and cried a little, then they filled the grave and loaded their packs into the canoes. They were all quiet, each lost in thoughts of what they had lost and how their lives had changed.

Finally, Rian broke the silence. “How will we know where to let you off? Will you recognize anything on the riverbank that will tell you we’re near your brother’s farm?”

“Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you. We came to the river a lot, just to relax or fish. We had a little area that we used near a deep pool, and Dad tied a rope on a tree so we could swing out and drop into the water. It’ll be on the east side of the river, and it’s easy to spot,” Bree told them.

About ten minutes later, she suddenly cried out, “There it is! There’s the rope, so my parents’ house is not far at all. Can we pull out over there? You can just let me out.” She pointed to a sand bar.

“We’re going to make sure you get to the house, and that your family is still there,” David insisted. “Our mom would disown us if we left a lady without seeing her safely to the door,” he said, giving his best bow and causing her to smile, considering that he was still seated in the canoe. He and Price jumped out and helped her and Rian. They pulled the canoes up onto the sand and got them secured.

Rian stood on one foot and lifted his crutches out to the side, giving Bree a wry grin. “I’ll say goodbye here, as I’m stuck being the guy who stays behind to guard the canoes. I hope everything gets better for you.”

“Thank you, Rian. Have a safe trip.”

David and Price helped her up the slope, scrambling for footholds in the loose sand. At the top, they peered through the trees, and Price asked, “Are you sure this is the right place? I don’t see a house. Is it further than you thought?”

Bree ran to the edge of the tree line, panic showing on her face. “It’s gone. Oh, no, Lord. The house is gone.”

Checking the area carefully for signs of anyone lurking around, David turned to his brother and murmured, “Stay here with Bree. I’ll go check it out. I think I see the remains of a house that’s burned down.”

“Okay, if you say so. I don’t like this.”

“You got a better idea?”

“Well, no. Just be careful.”

“Price, I will. I promise.”

David ran toward a tractor that sat out near where Bree had indicated the house should be. From there, he could
